W kwietniu ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers – Internetowa Korporacja ds. Przyznanych Nazw i Numerów) organizuje dla studentów spotkania online. Odbędą się one we wskazane poniżej kolejne czwartki na Zoomie. Aby dołączyć do spotkań organizatorzy proszą o zgłaszanie się po ich godzinę, numer pokoju i klucz do joanna_kulesza@wpia.uni.lodz.pl. ICANN jest globalną organizacją non-profit, odpowiedzialną za funkcjonowanie domen i działanie serwerów DNS na całym świecie (tzw. sieci szkieletowej), jak również tworzenie i zarządzanie systemem numerów IP, przydzielanych każdemu urządzeniu z dostępem do Internetu. Cały światowy Internet funkcjonuje dzięki ICANN. Już kilkakrotnie gościł na UŁ w minionym roku, w kwietniu powraca z wydarzeniami online.
W najbliższy czwartek 9 kwietnia, zapraszamy na spotkanie z Adamem Peakem, odpowiedzialnym w ICANN za współpracę ze środowiskiem akademickim i podmiotami pozarządowymi. Adam pracował przez wiele lat na uczelniach w Europie i Azji, w tym w Japonii. Przeprowadzi wykład na temat modelu zarządzania wielopodmiotowego Internetem oraz fundamentalnego znaczenia DNS dla funkcjonowania globalnej Sieci oraz roli ICANNu w tych obszarach. Rozpocznie od omówienia struktury organizacyjnej i decyzyjnej ICANN oraz ich rozwoju na przestrzeni ostatnich dwóch dekad odpowiadającego zmianom wynikającym z poszerzania pól zarządzania Internetem. Przedstawi System Nazw Domenowych (Domain Name System (DNS) i jego podstawowe znaczenie dla Internetu, jak również system zarządzania wielopodmiotowego urzeczywistniany przez ICANN, uwzględniający interesy wszystkich jego użytkowników. Przybliży niektóre z polityk, w tym również wpływ praw człowieka, szczególnie prawa do prywatności, na ich kształtowanie i wdrażanie.
Kolejne spotkanie odbędzie się 16 kwietnia – prowadzącą będzie Gabriella Schittek, koordynująca działania ICANN w Europie Środkowej. Jej wykład będzie poświęcony technicznej stronie funkcjonowania Sieci oraz aktualnemu rozwojowi mechanizmów ochrony praw użytkowników. Gabriella wyjaśni rolę ICANNu w tworzeniu globalnych polityk dla wszystkich grup użytkowników Internetu. Przedstawi również jak ICANN w ostatnim czasie wprowadził 1200 domen rodzajowych najwyższego stopnia (generic Top Level Domains), tak zwanych “new gTLDs”, jak .club, .sucks, .guru – czy nawet .budapest – i jak istniejące mechanizmy ochrony praw ich posiadaczy musiały zostać dostosowane do nowej rzeczywistości. Na zakończenie zostaną przedstawione możliwości zaangażowania się przez Studentki i Studentów w funkcjonowanie ICANNu.

ICANN has visited the University of Lodz several times last year, in April it returns with three events open to students of the University.

On April 9th, we will welcome Adam Peake, responsible for ICANN’s collaboration with academia and civil society organizations. He will speak on “ICANN and the Internet – the fundamental importance of the DNS and global multistakeholder policy”. In this second lecture in the series, Adam will discuss ICANN’s organizational and governance structures and how these have evolved over the last two decades reflecting changes in the broader Internet policy and governance landscape. He will talk about how the Domain Name System (DNS) is essential to the Internet, and ICANN’s inclusive multistakeholder policy making processes and multistakeholder community affects all Internet users. He will introduce some of the policy topics this global endeavor is addressing, including how ICANN is considering human rights impact of its work and data privacy.
Finally, on April 16th, Gabriella Schittek, coordinating the activities of the organization in Central Europe will talk about the technical side of Internet operation and current developments in the rights protection mechanisms. Gabriella will explain what is ICANN’s role in creating global policies for all Internet users. She will also present how ICANN recently introduced over 1200 new generic top level domain name endings (so called “new gTLDs”) to the Internet – such as .club, .sucks, .guru – or even .budapest – and how the existing rights protection mechanisms for brand owners had to be adjusted to fit the new reality. There will also be an introduction to what possibilities there are for students to get involved in ICANN, as ICANN is always very open to engage students in its work.
All meetings will be hosted by ICANN on Zoom on subsequent dates (time and room details available upon request at joanna_kulesza@wpia.uni.lodz.pl). The room space can host up to 100 users on a first come first served basis. The meetings are open to all UoL students, please make sure you arrive early enough to secure a space. The meetings will be held in English, the last 30 mins will be devoted to questions and answers.
